French Government awards UPDF Officers

O4th June 2017: The French Government awarded former UPDF Chief of Defence Forces and now Minister of State for Works, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, with the “Legion of Honor”. The other two UPDF senior Officers Maj Gen Sam Okiding and Col Bob Ogik were awarded the “National Defence Medal”. This was in recognition of the trios’ efforts in the fight against terrorism in the African Union region. The ceremony was held at Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

Speaking at the function on behalf of the Uganda Government, the State Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon Bright Rwamirama, commended the French Government for their continued support towards regional peace and stability, adding that the awards cement the relationship between the two countries. “This is a memorable occasion and the sky is the limit,” Hon Rwamirama told Officers and invited guests.

Stephanie Rivoal, France’s envoy to Uganda, noted that the awards revitalized Uganda’s distinguished role in the fight against terrorism. She further added that the awards exhibit the power of good work, honesty, and determination in defending value.

General Katumba, on behalf of the recipients, appreciated the enormous support from the French Government towards building strong and stable nations. Gen Katumba dedicated the medals to the fallen gallant Officers and Militants who have passed on in the bid to liberate Somalia.
